Rainsville to offer senior discounts to Fyffe

Published September 24, 2009

Monday, the Rainsville City Council approved giving senior and disabled citizens in Fyffe the same discount on sewage disposal that the citizens of Rainsville enjoy.

Rainsville will send out letters on Oct. 1. Citizens of Fyffe who want the $8 per month discount will need to show documentation of being at least 65 years old or disabled.

"About 40 percent of Rainsville's 1,161 residential accounts qualify," said councilman Bejan Taheri. "Fyffe has 354 residential accounts and probably has around the same percentage."

The discounts will begin on Jan. 1.

The flowmeter from Fyffe has been installed and calibrated. All other meters have also been serviced and calibrated.

The council also agreed to sign two-year contracts with Fyffe for the sewer service.

• With Rainsville's old computer server giving problems, the council voted to buy a new one, at a cost of $5,711.20.

This server isn't as advanced as the one the city wanted but for budgetary reasons, the council decided to buy one that can be added on to later.

"This one has the capability to take add-ons for paperless billing and the like," said councilman Rodger Lingerfelt. "Buying this one now will help keep us from losing information and when we have the money, we can buy the add-ons."

• The corner of White Street and White Circle will be repaired by adding a box to the drain system.

Monday, rain backed up to the carport of the home on the corner.

• The council agreed to buy a pH meter and a hand-held barometer for the sewage treatment plant. These are required by ADEM for testing but have been borrowed in the past. The cost will be approximately $850.

"We've been getting barometer reports from the Fort Payne airport and because of the altitude difference, they're not exact," said councilman David Shirey.

• Mayor Donnie Chandler presented the upcoming budget of $3,050,000. It was approved.

• The council went into executive session for 31 minutes but no action was taken.
