IDER—Ider High School’s Lynda Ring will be continuing her softball career at Snead State after her high school playing days are over.
After attending a tryout at Snead State in the fall of 2009, Ring impressed the Lady Parsons so much she was offered a scholarship the same day.
Ring, a five-year member of the Lady Hornets softball team, has been a starter for the past three seasons.
The senior catcher was a huge contributor on last years Class 2A state championship team.
Ring batted .317 while helping lead the Lady Hornets to a 39-5 record.
“Lynda is a very consistent player,” said Ider head coach David Hughes. “She has good leadership qualities, and we will be counting on her a lot this year. She’s just a great kid. I never have to worry about her giving 100%. We’ve always used her primarily as a catcher, but we will be depending on her to help fill the void at the pitcher’s mound.”
Due to graduation, Ider will be forced to build back a once dominating pitching rotation.
Hughes said that Ring has prior pitching experience, but had not been called on a lot to pitch because of her need at the catching position.
“Lynda has worked hard in the off-season to hone her pitching,” said Hughes. “She’s such a great competitor and very versatile, we’ll be able to move her around some. We’ll have to keep her behind the plate most of the time. We’ll be depending on her a lot more this year for leadership.”
As far as her playing at Snead State, Hughes feels very confident she will be able to step right in and contribute.
“Like I said, she’s so versatile that she can help Snead in a lot of different ways,” Hughes said. “She’ll do fine, Snead is lucky to have gotten her.”
Ring and the Lady Hornets will began their 2A state title defense starting March 5th, hosting the Ider Varsity Round Robin tournament.
