New commissioner sworn in Tuesday
Published October 15, 2009
Like a good neighbor, Chris Kuykendall is there.
Tuesday, he was sworn in a District 3 commissioner, after being appointed by Governor Bob Riley two weeks ago. For the next year, he will fill the seat vacated when Brant Craig passed away on July 16.
"I want to continue the progress the previous commissioner started, with maybe a few minor modifications," Kuykendall said. "I basically want to assure the people that I'm willing to work with them to improve public safety."
Kuykendall was sworn in by District Judge Ronnie Osborn, who was a commissioner until gaining his current office.
"I'm honored by this appointment," Kuykendall said. "I look forward to serving this county and state with honesty and integrity. I promise to be as honest as possible with everyone I have to deal with."
In Kuykendall's first commission meeting, the commission voted to appropriate $13,898.50 to the county EMA for materials to upgrade the radio tower on Sand Mountain.
• voted to vacate County Road 89 north of Mentone.
• voted to vacate an uninhabited portion of County Road 636, which is also on Lookout Mountain, close to the Cherokee County line and close to the Georgia state line. The road was washed out during recent floods but since no houses are along it, it was decided that closing it would be the better option.
• Gave a contract to Batey and Sanders for this year's grader blades.
• Gave permission for county engineer Ben Luther to attend the state's county engineer meeting in Prattville on Nov. 16-17.
