Beta clubs need help with funds

Published June 4, 2009

DEKALB COUNTY—Students from three area schools are going to represent DeKalb County at the Beta Club national convention this month in Orlando, Fla.—if they have the money to get there. All three schools—Fyffe, Geraldine and Plainview—have conducted fund raisers to raise the money in question; however, all could use some last minute help by way of donations.
At Plainview, sponsor David Holt said that his Beta students raised $9,000 dollars via bake sales, car washes, a chicken dinner and through donations received. However, that’s a little over half of what is needed.
“We were able to raise a little over $9,000 to go toward charter buses, but they cost $16,000,” explained Holt. “That’s a cost that the parents and students were going to absorb...yes, we are willing to take donations from anyone who is willing to help. We will use those donations for food or any other items that we will have there.” Holt added that anyone wishing to make donations should contact Plainview school at 256-638-3510.
At Geraldine, Junior Beta sponsor Kathy Brown explained that her students have waited tables, sold Beta Club cookbooks and Geraldine water bottles—both still available—but funds are still needed.
“Normally we have some people who sponsor individual students who cannot otherwise afford to go,” said Brown, “but this year the response has not been as good. We would welcome anyone wishing to sponsor a student.” Anyone wishing to make donations to Geraldine Beta should contact Brown at 256-717-8979.
At Fyffe, sponsor Natasha Hilley said that her school has raised all of the neccessary funds to make the trip.
“Horizon Bank was our big donor; they gave us $3,000 dollars. We washed cars, we had a yard sale, we sold Vidalia onions, and sold chances on a Gulf Shores vacation,” Hilley explained. The rest of the money was raised on sheer donations from the community.”
“It’s really overwhelming that they have supported us; it’s something different that Fyffe has done. That’s something they all say - they’ve given to athletics, or something different from academics. But this is academics. That’s something the students have really worked hard with. I’ve got a list of proably 25 plus people. We just want to thank all of the contributors.” Fyffe’s Beta club will perform their Group Talent for the community in the high school gym on Saturday, June 6, at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
Each of the three schools received $1,000 from the DeKalb County School Board to put toward their trips.
