UGF fund still needs donations

Published October 29, 2009

With the campaign nearly at an end, the DeKalb County United Givers Fund is still only halfway to its goal of $255,000.

During a meeting held Oct. 21, a progress report indicated the fund-raising campaign still has a long way to go in reaching its goal, but there have been several bright spots during this year's campaign.

Shelly Allen, UGF Chariman, said a few groups have already reached their goal, including City of Fort Payne Schools, Fort Payne Clothing and Variety, Fort Payne Residential, Fischer Community and Fyffe Business and Industry.

DeKalb Regional Medical Center has already exceeded its goal for this year.

For the fifth consecutive year, the City of Fort Payne Sanitation Department had 100 percent participation.

The office of DeKalb County Revenue Commission had 100 percent of its employees participating in the campaign this year.

Employees of GameTime and Horizon Bank in Fyffe increased their donations this year.

The family of Paul Crow presented a memorial gift to UGF.

Volunteer involvement has increased, thanks in part to volunteer recruitment by Carolyn Harrison, commercial division chair.

Several local businesses and organizations, including Fitness First, The Fraternal Order of Police, Precision Auto Wash and OI' Tymers BBQ and Blues, have either completed or promised to host fund-raising events.

Restaurants county-wide have participated in the Friday project in which people who wear UGF t-shirts receive a free soft drink from participating restaurants.

Some areas are still responding to appeals that were mailed out in September and October, and some industries are still working on their campaigns.

"But many more reported that the businesses and individuals approached 'just don't have it to give this year,'" Allen said.

Agencies that depend on UGF funds include the DeKalb County Chapter of the American Red Cross, the ARC, CASA, CASA-Helping Hands, the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, Salvation Army, the Fort Payne-DeKalb Child Development Center, Partnership for a Drug Free DeKalb and the USO.

If UGF does not make its goals, they will have to cut the amount of money given to each agency. That will mean the agencies will be more limited in the number of people they can serve during a time when requests for assistance are at an all-time high. These agencies will also have to spend more of their time raising funds.

To help these agencies and the people they serve, send a donation to the United Givers Fund at P.O. Box 680292, Fort Payne, Ala. 35968. For more information contact the UGF office at 845-4006 or visit the website at www.ugfdekalb.org.

Funds must be given to UGF by Nov. 27.
