Fyffe's UFO Days coming this weekend
Published September 4, 2009
This weekend, those strange objects floating over the Fyffe area probably won't be spacecraft.
Rather, they will be hot air balloons, as the town celebrates the fifth annual UFO Days. The festival will open at 4 p.m. Friday, with Silver Wings, a command exhibition parachute team, dropping in with the American flag.
The Unforgettable Family Outing will last all day Saturday, with musical acts performing throughout. WQSB's C.J. Jolley will be the emcee.
Billy Joe Royal is the headliner.
For anyone who has forgotten, in the late 1980s, Fyffe was the unmatched leader of the free world in UFO sightings — and gained a nationwide fame for it. For awhile, the streets were packed at night with people wanting to see a spaceship.
It got so big that on April 13, 1989, the state of Alabama passed a resolution declaring Fyffe "The UFO Capital of Alabama."
This year, as part of the celebration, Darth Vader and a few stormtroopers will be on hand from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Members of the Alabama Garrison of the 501st Legion, dubbed as the World's Definitive Imperial Costuming Organization, will have a tent set up so that revelers can have their picture made with the Star Wars characters on hand.
There will be an antique car and tractor show.
