Godwin resigns as girls basketball coach

Published April 15, 2005

In what she called a difficult decision, Jana Godwin confirmed to The Weekly Post last Thursday that she is resigning as the varsity girls head coach at Crossville, stepping down after six seasons at the helm.

Godwin said she wants to spend more time with her family, husband Lee J., daughter Harley, 6, and son Parker, 5.

“It’s a family decision,” Godwin said. “I thought about it a lot, and I talked to my husband about it a lot. It was a real difficult decision to make.

“I love basketball and I love these girls, but it was something I needed to go ahead and do. I want to spend more time with my family and do the mother thing.”

Godwin plans to remain at Crossville as the schools’ elementary librarian.

“I like it here at Crossville,” she said. “The community has been real supportive of me during my coaching (tenure).”

Godwin took over at Crossville in 1999 after serving as the head coach at Carlisle Middle School in Guntersville .

The Lady Lions finished 16-12 in Godwin’s first season. Crossville just missed advancing Northeast Regional Tournament in 2003 and 2004, falling to Ashville and Springville in the sub-regional round those years.

Crossville finished 6-22 this season.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” Godwin said of her tenure. “We had some hard times, but it’s still been rewarding for me and I hope for the girls. The record may not show that, but it’s been a good experience.”

Godwin, a member of Fyffe’s first state championship team in 1986 and a 1999 inductee into the DeKalb County Hall of Fame, didn’t rule out a return to coaching sometime in the future.
